4 Ways to Foster Innovative Creativity
By Peter Verschuere
Here at CogniStreamer we strongly believe in innovation through collaboration. Our core values are the paradigm of open innovation and the principle of "the wisdom of crowds."
So we realize very well that creativity, a critical eye, and an open mind are essential skills in every organization that pursues a sustainable culture of innovation. When looking for improvements (or even whole new concepts), having a community of employees, partners and clients that can contribute interesting ideas or solve issues quickly and effectively using a dedicated innovation tool is beneficial to everyone. But how do you get the creative juices flowing? How can you stimulate the creativity and the willingness to share of the crowd you have at your disposal?
1. Stress is a creativity and innovation killer.
Create a positive and encouraging work environment, physically (clean, open spaces, no noise, bright colors), socially (friendly, respectful) as well as virtually (pleasant, attractive innovation platform). If participants feel comfortable and encouraged, they will not be afraid to express their ideas to the community.
"A little nonsense every now and then is relished by the wisest men" - This quote of Willy Wonka (in fact it's Benjamin Franklin's) is one of my favorites.
When people are relaxed and having fun, the potential for creative insight is dramatically increased. Bring a sense of light-hearted playfulness into your innovation process. This really can boost your day-to-day creativity.
2. Appreciate the beginner's mind.
Rethink old problems or ideas with a beginner's insight. Invite input from people who know little about the subject. This can lead to breakthrough innovations.
Consider inviting a new member to the community if it seems creativity and innovation are lacking. A new thinker can bring a fresh perspective and more ideas to the table.
3. There's no need to be right.
Don't criticize. Keep an open mind, and let go of the need to be right.
This doesn't mean you can't discuss pros and cons, but don't fanatically take down someone else's suggestions.
Fanatical criticism will likely cause community members to feel inferior, thereby impeding creativity and willingness to share thoughts.
4. Promote regular brainstorming sessions through innovation challenges or idea campaigns.
Challenges and campaigns give the crowd a chance to produce a high quantity of focused ideas.
Once a large store of ideas is built up, members have an opportunity to vote, discuss, promote and invite others.
This way only the best ideas of the bunch bubble up, leading to yet a higher quality of ideas as well.
Conclusion
I'm convinced that practicing these four guidelines does result in original thought, and accelerates creative thinking. However, I'm aware of the fact these are only a few tips to encourage innovative creativity. There must be more, so it would be great if you could share your experience or suggestions with me!

As a head of Unilever Best Foolds, Mr Gunning took his 250 top leaders on learning
journeys to countries such as China, India, Sri Lanka. There, they are immersed in community service, interacted with monks, students, visited local markets, and homes, stayed at orphanages, monastries, ashrams, microenterprises, and charities. This helped them reflect on the real product needs, the role of business, etc.
Cheers,
